Fiat 500 Abarth Hits Dealers in March

January 29th, 2012 Sean Mortlock Posted in Jeeps No Comments »

Fiat has declared its victorious return this year. Small, chic and relatively inexpensive minicars are now available for the public. The performance model, the Fiat 500 Abarth, will be arriving soon.

Nationally, individuals are extremely excited about the Fiat 500 Abarth. Luckily, people in the U.S. will get to see the car fairly soon.

The car, which is spruced up by Fiat's in-house tuning division, is 1.5 times more powerful than the regular Fiat 500. According to USA Today, the wizards at Abarth took out the puny 1.4-liter MultiAir motor with its pitiful 101 horsepower and supercharged it. The result is a furious, fire-breathing beast capable of 160 horsepower. It arrives, according to Car and Driver, in March at Fiat dealerships nationwide.

There is a lot of power in a little car with 160 horsepower. In contrast to the BMW 135i, it gets better fuel mileage and is $14,000 cheaper. The BMW 135i gets 300 horsepower while the Fiat gets 160 horsepower. Still, the Fiat has a higher weight-to-power ratio as the BMW 1 series is over 700 pounds heavier than the Fiat.

Abarth also tunes up the suspension and puts on bigger wheels and brakes. Buyers also get a free day of "driving school," where they learn how to handle the 500 Abarth at the Abarth Driving Experience by the Richard Petty Experience, the performance car driving school run by NASCAR driver Richard Petty. It is only accessible with a five-speed transmission, accord-ing to Fiat, which gives the typical 500 better gas mileage.

With a destination fee, the base model will cost $22,700.

Even though no other competitors will have the same weight-to-power ratio as the Fiat, there are still other possibilities for buyers. That consists of the Mini-Cooper S and the Volkswagen Golf GTI.

For $17,495, you can get the Subaru Impreza. It has a greater weight to power ratio, has about the same mileage and has more room with all-wheel drive. With $19,545, you can get the hybrid Honda CR-Z which will have better fuel mileage. For $18,845, you can get the Toyota Matrix. With $20,095, you can get the Mazda 3 five-door. All of these automobiles have higher weight-to-power ratios and are a bit cheaper than Fiat.

Little Mrs. Opportunity

One colorful sunny Saturday afternoon you find yourself on the side of a busy bustling street. The warm sunlight beats down on your Nissan reflecting bright warm sunlight all around. The crispy dry leaves of fall rustle about as the cool breeze blows across your face. If you weren't searching for your jumper cables you might be enjoying all this.

You peer over your trunk as you hear the unlocking click of the Kia in front of you. You notice a beautiful young brunette about to enter her vehicle as she gives you a glimmer of a smile. As a Lexus zips buy you, you peer at your exposed engine and manage a half smile in return. The heat level seems to rise as your heart pounds at her beauty. "Could you use some help?" she says. "Um,... er... no, t-thanks, I'm fine" you stutter. "If you're sure, enjoy your day." She replies as she enters her car, waits for a passing Lincoln and Jeep and speeds away as quickly as she came. Leaving your hopes dashed and you still stranded.

The side of a busy street is the last place you want to spend your afternoon, especially when you have already had a long day changing tires at the tire shop. As you contemplate your future with the hot gal that just left you stranded, you hear a couple cars revving their engines at the light. A Honda and an Audi side by side with sleek 18-inch rims and low profile sporty tires about to tear up the street. The light turns green and both cars fish tail past a Toyota as the speed of down the street.

As your frustration builds you whip out your phone to phone a friend. Thank the lord I have a cell phone. As you hit the call button the screen fades to black. "Dead battery, really?" you think to yourself. Your anger builds as a clean-cut businessman pulls up in his BMW and rushes past you and disappears quickly into the office building. He doesn't even hear you as you call out to him.

With the wind taken from your sails you sit on the fender of your car and begin to sulk. Life goes on around you as a couple SUV's, a Chevrolet, a Lamborghini and a very nice Lotus with brand new quality tires pass you by. You hang your head in jealousy that these guys are on their way home and you are not.

Out of the blue a Bright blue Ford cruises by and honks the horn. You glance up as you notice the gal from before busting a U-turn. "Still stranded?" she says as she screeches to a stop beside you. I was just grabbing the kids from school in my husband's car and noticed your sad face. You thanks her for her kindness and jump the car. "So much for that" you think as your car starts and she drives away into the distance.

Armed forces Jeeps Thru the Years

January 11th, 2012 Ryan Harris Posted in Jeeps No Comments »

The 1st "Jeep" used by the Division was produced in 1940, and they started with 70 of them. These were manufactured by the North American Bantam Car Company of Butler, Pennsylvania. That same year, Willys built two quads for the Division in a competition. Ford also attempted to get into the game with the Midget, but it was a particularly giant vehicle, and both the Ford and the Bantam slipped to the power of the Willys power. After 1941, Bantam was no longer being ordered by the military, and all that stayed was Willys, and Ford. In mid-1945, the term "jeep" came to be, to describe the army autos.

Jeeps were employed in each branch of the military, and had diverse purposes. Each infantry regiment were issued about 145. Some of many uses for the Jeep included being used as firefighting pump carriers, wire laying, tractors, and carrying the hurt, solely to cite a couple. It was truly a multi purpose vehicle, and it got around quickly and easily.

When the Regiment figured that the Bantam company was not big enough to make all of its required vehicles, it gave the plan to both Ford and Willy with instructions to make tiny changes of their own. They all looked alike in style, and 1500 of them were selected for field testing. While heavy, the Willys engine was quite forceful for its time, and that was an enormous reason why they won that contract.

In World War Two, America provided to Great Britain and the Soviet Red Military approximately 30% of their Jeep production. And humorously, in Korea, troops created a JEEP acronym, Just Enough Essential Parts, as their jeeps were intensely basic. After the war, Jeeps became available in surplus sales. And in parts of the planet where America had been, some Jeeps were left in the dust, and then utilized in various ways, for example being used as taxis in the Philippines. And for the army, lately it has seen the Jeep slowly replaced by such cars as the Humvee.

The Jeep has had many nicknames. And has gone thru varied owners. From 1944-1953, Jeep proprietorship belonged to Willys-Overland. From 1953-1964, it was Kaiser-Jeep, more widely known as Willys Motors. From 1964-1970, it was known as Kaiser-Jeep. From 1970-1987, the product belonged to AMC/Renault. And finally, possession of the name fell into the hands of Chrysler in 1987. In 1998, Daimler Chrysler combined, but up to this day, Jeep remains the registered trademark of Chrysler.

Jeep history has a storied and proud military history. Thru out the years, the Jeep has served lifesaving functions, has had practical applications, and has represented America in many proud ways. There are photographs that show Jeep has performed a part in making history, and helping the world become a better place for all mankind. Its utilitarian functions made it what it was. And its style and utility keep it what it is. Jeep holds a place in military history, and it is a place it earned and merits.

Lunchbox Lockers Offer Maximum Traction For Minimal Cost

June 19th, 2011 Shawn Carlsson Posted in Jeeps No Comments »

These aftermarket Lunchbox Lockers are made for most Sport Utility Vehicles, Trucks and most Jeeps. They are available in a drop-in, and light duty unit. They are very reminiscent of a physical lunchbox, where the box itself stays the same, but the contents inside of it are changed. The stock carrier is much like the preverbial "lunchbox". This is a slang term used to describe this type of locker.

Lunchbox lockers operate just like their full-size counterparts. They're designed to automatically engage and lock both wheels on an axle at the very instant it detects one wheel receiving more torque than the other one. This locking action applies 100% of the driving force to both wheels, essentially creating a spool. When the torque difference between each wheel is reduced, then the locker can unlock and allow differentiation of the wheels which is beneficial for maneuvering around corners.

The lunchbox locker has its pros and cons.

The main advantages for these drop-in lockers is that they are simple units which are designed to install into a factory open differential carrier (and sometimes even in factory limited slip carriers). In most cases, the carrier does not need to be removed from the axle which means the ring and pinion gears do not need to be reset. In the few instances where it's necessary to remove the carrier, it's still not necessary to reset the ring and pinion because the ring gear is bolted to the carrier and as long as the carrier gets reinstalled with the correct shims that were already in place, the ring and pinion backlash will remain the same. This is very advantageous because the expertise and tools necessary for setting up a ring and pinion from scratch can get expensive quickly. If the time comes that you no longer want your lunchbox locker, simply remove it and reinstall the stock differential parts and your differential will act just as it did when it was new.

The main con is that these boxes are only as good as the physical carrier that they are bolted onto. If your vehicle has a smaller axle, it is possible that there may be some limitations to what you can do with your vehicle. When your vehicle has smaller axles and larger tires, it can become a hazard, in the fact that it may not be able to lock both wheels with this type of setup. Although, this is largely dependent upon how the vehicle is driven and the type of terrain that the vehicle is on. Still, many fans of these boxes will swear by them, even in the roughest and most extreme of conditions because they generally work very well in so many different applications.

In the end it comes down to how much you are willing to spend. For the average lunchbox carrier, it costs around $200-$300 dollars for a tried and true unit. For a beginner that is just getting into 4wd recreationally, this is a minimal cost that is easily affordable. Plus is more than outweighs the cost of a traditional 4wd vehicle. The 2wd vehicles with these equipped can do almost the same performance wise and those that are 4wd with an open differential. Bring in the easy to install nature of these and you too can enjoy a 2wd vehicle that can achieve off-road prowess much to the chagrin of the 4wd drivers.

The Powertrax Lockrightlunchbox locker is an excellent choice for any driver wanting to get awesome off-road performance while maintaining a tight budget. You can find those and even Detriot locker products at many online retailers.

Knowing When To Replace Your Shock Absorbers

June 17th, 2011 Shawn Carlsson Posted in Jeeps No Comments »

Did you know that each component of your car serves a very important purpose? Shock absorbers are the key component in your car's suspension that keep your tires planted to the road. When your shocks wear out your car can become unsafe to drive. Before it gets to that point you need to have a set of replacement shocks installed.

There are a few ways to check and see if your shocks are worn out. Learn these tips by following the directions. This will give you a better way to diagnose any issues that arise yourself and save money on the diagnostic part of the process.

One is while you are driving the vehicle. If, after you hit a bump in the road, your car continues to bounce up and down, your shocks are worn out. Many people will not notice this, however, as the shocks wear out slowly, over a long period of time.

You can also look physically at your shocks. To look for them you simply look under your vehicle to see where they are located and take special care to view the bottom of them. If you see that fluid has leaked out of them this is a sign that they are wearing out. You can do this by pushing down on them in the corners. This is located right above the wheel. If your shocks are healthy they will bounce once or twice and then stop. If they continue to bounce then they need to be replaced. Do this on all four tires and shocks. For larger vehicles push on the bumper if you cannot reach the shocks.

The reason it is so important to replace worn out shocks is because as stated earlier, they are responsible for keeping your tires in contact with the road. If you are driving down a rough road and the wheels are bouncing up and down, worn shocks will actually allow the wheels to completely lose contact with the roadway. This is especially dangerous if you hit a dip or a bump during a high speed corner. Good shocks will also help to minimize body roll, also very important during cornering.

Buying replacement shocks is a decision you will need to make once you have determined if you need them. Buying shocks will need to happen but knowing where to get them is another thing. Wherever you buy them you will want to ensure that you are purchasing them from a reputable company. How do you know if a company has a good reputation? The best way to tell is by checking those who have used them before. Get recommendations, check online reviews and see if they are a member of the Better Business Bureau. All of these steps will make sure you are getting quality service.

This is not a car part that you want to be frugal about. Shocks that have quality will ensure the safety standard of your vehicle. Standard shocks made for your vehicle is important from a dealer or you can look to aftermarket parts companies for a great working shock, but never go with the cheap replacement part when it comes to shocks.

Get replacement shocks if you need them. Check them yourself and then start looking for who can replace them. This is vital for your safety and the safety of anyone else riding in your vehicle Look to the experts who can help you when it is time to replace your shocks with quality materials.

Knowing when to install truck shocks is an important part of safety and preventive maintenance for your vehicle. Many trucks and SUV opt for the installation of Rancho RS 5000 shocks when it comes time to replace them.

Shock Absorbers: The Things That Keep Your Car From Bouncing

June 16th, 2011 Shawn Carlsson Posted in Jeeps No Comments »

One of the most important components on a vehicle is its shock absorbers, as they prevent excessive and dangerous motion of the motor vehicle and its suspension. If motor vehicles do not have shocks fitted, they would be very difficult to control on the road. Due to the bouncing that would occur, the tires will not touch the road surface and braking and trying to turn a corner will become hazardous.

To give you a notion of how shocks work, think of yourself driving down a road with speed humps. Should your vehicle only have springs and no shocks, once you go over the speed hump, the springs carry on moving to and fro until such time as they rid themselves of the momentum of compression. This causes the vehicle to sway and jump around as soon as it has crossed the speed hump.

Now, another example of a car driving over the exact same speed hump, but this one has springs as well as shocks fitted. The springs would still absorb the bounce on the speed hump, however, the springs' movement will be dampened by the shock absorbers. The shocks will attain this by changing the kinetic energy into heat and by doing so, steadying the vehicle's movement.

The way the shock works is that it makes use of two valves which increases the effectiveness of it. One of the valves is connected to a piston rod, which is connected to a piston. This piston sits in a tube filled with hydraulic oil. When the car wheel hits a bump in the road, this causes the spring to coil and uncoil. The energy of the spring is transferred to the shock absorber through the upper mount, down through the piston rod and into the piston.

Fluids leak through small holes in the piston as it moves down and up in the tube. As these holes are quite small, a little bit of fluid which is under great pressure due to the movement of the piston, passes through. It then slows the piston and this slows the spring. This process allows the dampening of shock by the spring's movement to enter the shock absorbers.

All modern shocks are speed sensitive, meaning that the faster the suspension moves, the more resistance the shock absorber provides. This allows shocks to adjust to the conditions of the road and to inhibit all of the dangerous actions that take place in a vehicle, like swaying from side to side and creating problems when braking.

The condition of your shock absorbers should be checked when you start losing control of the vehicle upon braking and trying to enter corners. You will also feel the unevenness when you travel on uneven road surfaces or go over bumps in the road.

Rancho shock absorbers have been the ideal choice for off-roaders for over 30 years. Their newest line of performance shocks are called the Rancho quick LIFT which is a fully adjustable shock and suspension lift in one.

What Makes the Differential on Your Car Work?

June 11th, 2011 Shawn Carlsson Posted in Jeeps No Comments »

A vehicle works by converting chemical energy in gasoline into kinetic energy by means of combustion. The engine rotates a shaft which is connected to a gear-box; gears in this box determine how much of the power is sent to the wheels. Another shaft exits the gear box and is attached to a differentials box which then sends the power to each of the wheels.

The power could be sent to the wheels direct from the gearbox but this can cause problems. When a car turns the wheels will spin at different speeds because they are travelling different distances in the same amount of time. A differential box allows for the wheels to spin at different rates.

Front wheel drive cars will have the differential box located at the front of the car, while rear wheel drive cars will have the box located at the back of the car. Four wheel drive cars will have three boxes, one for each set of wheels and one i in between the back and front sets of wheels.

Essentially a differential box is a set of gears perpendicular to one another. The shaft from the gear box is connected at ninety degrees to two sets of gears which attach to the wheels. Two smaller pinion gears attached to the wheel gears are what allows for them to turn at different speeds. When a wheel is spinning faster the pinion gears spin as well allowing the other wheel to continue at its normal speed.

The basic form of differential allows applies the same torque (rotational force) to each wheel however. The speed of the wheel will be limited by how much traction is available to the wheels. This means if one wheel has less grip than its counterpart it will slip, which can damage components of the car. A limited slip differential can remedy this.

A Limited slip differential basically uses a clutch plate to stop the wheels slipping. A spring is attached to the wheel gears which pushes them against a clutch plate when they start to slip. This plate requires a large amount of torque to get away form so a larger amount of torque is sent to the wheel which has more grip. This means the components are protected and the car continues at the same speed.

Essentially what differentials do is allow for wheels to travel at different speeds. This is needed for when a car is turning a corner or for when one wheel has greater grip than the other. Without this the wheel would be forced to travel at the same speed and would always be slipping, causing damage to car components.

A highly recommended differential upgrade is a Powertrax LockRight. They offer exceptional 4x4 off road performance with an economical price tag and are readily available for most trucks, SUV, and Jeep vehicles.

The Workings of a Ring & Pinion

May 25th, 2011 Shawn Carlsson Posted in Jeeps No Comments »

Pinion and ring gear system makes it possible for certain vehicles to move back and forth. Pick-up trucks and bygone era rear-wheel vehicles and make use of this system because of its power generation capability. The latter make use of this system to generate requisite power for hauling things. Following lines provide an insight into how ring & pinion gears work.

Its working is not pretty straightforward to understand, particularly if you do not have information about its construction. This gear system is an important link between engine, drive shaft and rear-wheels. It helps in converting drive shaft movement into that of wheels.

Size of vehicle, where this gear system will be used, has a tremendous impact on size of a pinion gear. It can have diameter as big as four inches, as small as two inches or anywhere in between these two figures. It has an intricate shape which resembles a cone cut from its top.

This gear is connected with ring gear at a ninety degree angle. This baroque construction helps in transfer of engine movement to the rear wheels in a suitable manner. Rear-wheel driven cars, pick-up trucks etc are able to move only due to such construction.

There is a significant difference of size between these two gears. Ring gear is larger one among these two components. Its size varies between six and twelve inches. It fits with the pinion gear with help of its gears which settle into gear slots perfectly.

A metal housing, known as differential gearbox, keeps this gear system in its place. A bearing is made use of in order to serve a couple of purposes. The primary purpose of this bearing is reduction in friction and keeping two components of this system in contact.

A similar construction is found in revolving doors as well. In case of such doors, central shaft does the work of the engine and outer portion moves with its help. This gear system performs the task of conversion of movement of central shaft into that of the outer portion.

Use of heavy gear oil is made to lubricate different parts which come into contact. Smooth function of the system is ensured in this way. This information regarding how ring & pinion gears work will help you to understand the way underlying systems make a vehicle move.

Many ring & pinion options are available for most domestic and import axles. Dana 30 ring and pinion gears have many ratios in standard and reverse patterns.

A Guide To Automotive In Indonesia

April 22nd, 2011 Anne Ahira Posted in Jeeps No Comments »

This Indonesian automotive industry has been on the rise for a major amount of time now.

However, that doesn't mean that the industry has created progress levels for every yr within the last few five years.

Actually, this latest international recession had a significant result in the nation in Indonesia.

For instance, in '09, Indonesia for a region taken some sort of steep drop throughhome-based automobile revenues.

The particular volumes within 2008 were definitely about 600,000 units that dropped through more than fifteen percent to settle at approximately four hundred and eighty, thousand units in '09.

Nonetheless, regardless of a really big decline, the particular Indonesian motor vehicle business appeared to be pegged to recover a good deal of this kind of stop by the industry professionals.

One of the main Indonesian automotive business luminaries, Johnny Darmawan, estimated this sector to have sales for about 550,thousand pieces in 2010.

When such a screening machine was designed, it absolutely was viewed as something excessively optimistic.

On the other hand, since that time, the particular sector has held in keeping with the screening machine and has revealed this with a solid growth rate.

Already, as per reports, the Indonesian automobile industry reached a number of three hundred,000 from the primary five months of the year itself.

Whether or not the market meets this magic volume of 550,thousand units to the yr in this year will be unstable, but it has now provenits good chance to the world.

The bright future of the Indonesian automotive sector can also be seen by the increasing interest associated with international automotive manufacturers in the nation.

Here are several purposes why the particular automotive business in the nation has become consistently on the way up.

AFTA: The first variable generating this particular growth, depending on industry experts, is the ASEAN Free Business Area (AFTA) that helps the reason for regional manufacturers out of all nations which have been a part of ASEAN.

While AFTA was initially brought in last 1992, it offers, only in recent times, happen to be showing its impact on the particular automotive industries in leading ASEAN countries including Indonesia and Thailand.

It should additionally be observed that AFTA flatly aims at luring much more International Immediate Choice (FDI).

Buying strength: The particular buying strength about emerging economic climates like The far east and also The indian subcontinent are well documented throughout the world.

Nonetheless, it is due to both of these countries' great prospective that countries like Indonesia weren't covered in media as often.

If a person takes away the Indian and also Oriental development rates in the Asian set up then nations such as Indonesia along with Thailand will hold swing.

This, essentially, means that the growth in the Indonesian automobile market is only at the rear of both powerhouses which is supposed to get caught up eventually.

The above mentioned two aspects combined with fall through effect connected with development in near neighbors India and The far east has offered this Indonesian automotive sector an importantboost.

In addition, this kind of impetus is predicted in order to maintain on its own for the different future too.

Hence, as being a bottom line, it may be declared this Indonesian automotive market only has started for the way with becoming a significant powerhouse in the country and that all factors indicate severe optimism.
